Non-Neoplastic and Neoplastic Pathology of the Pancreas

Abstract

The pancreas can be involved by a variety of developmental, inflammatory and neoplastic disorders. In contrast to the tubal gut, the spectrum of pancreatic neoplasms is broad and includes both cystic and solid tumors. Ductal adenocarcinoma arises from multiple distinct precursor pathways but histogenesis of some pancreatic tumors remains to be elucidated. Neuroendocrine tumors may occur in a sporadic or syndromic setting and are classified and graded similar to other sites in the gastrointestinal tract. This chapter provides a comprehensive review of non-neoplastic and neoplastic pancreatic pathology. The role of ancillary work up is emphasized, wherever necessary.
