Surgical Veterinary Oncology, is the companion animal truly a good spontaneous model for human disease?

Abstract

Prof. Jolle Kirpensteijn, DVM, of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Clinical Sciences of Companion Animals has begun using a new method for treating cancer, with the cooperation of the University Medical Centre Utrecht (UMCU). This method involves injecting malignant tumours with radioactive globules developed by the UCMU’s Department of Radiology, Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine. This new treatment appears to be very successful for treating dogs and cats suffering from cancer. Some tumours began showing clear signs of regression after only a single treatment, while others had disappeared completely. The main advantage of this therapy is that the patients suffered almost no side effects.
