Themapoli voor ketamine-geïnduceerde cystitis: eerste ervaringen en resultaten

Abstract

Recreational ketamine use is increasing in the Netherlands. Ketamine abuse can damage the urinary tracts, and induce urogenital complaints with severe impact on quality of life. In this article we describe the first Dutch outpatient clinic dedicated to patients with ketamine-induced urogenital complaints. To date 30 patients have completed the diagnostic and therapeutic protocol. Ten percent showed involvement of the upper urinary tract and were further evaluated and treated to preserve renal function. The other 90% were counseled to cease Ketamine abuse and were supported with medication treating the urogenital complaints. Within 3 months 71% succeeded to stop with ketamine and significantly more often had symptom reduction compared to patients continuing Ketamine. Recognizing ketamine abuse as potential cause of urogenital symptoms in younger patients is essential due to the potential hazard for the upper urinary tract and due to the reversibility of symptoms after successful weaning from ketamine abuse.
