Abstract

What difference does the neighbourhood make? A social-pedagogical view This article analyzes how the neighbourhood – as an environment that is built, shared and lived in – intervenes in everyday socialization processes and affects the relationship between the individual and society. This question is answered by means of a qualitative study which examines the social-pedagogical meaning of public space in three neighbourhoods in Ghent (Belgium). The research results are discussed in the light of the proposition that the neighbourhood is the bearer of social developments and meanings. To understand the community interventions fully, it is necessary not only to answer the question of what type of intervention is at work in a given context, but also to critically examine the basic assumptions of community interventions, and the concept of “community” that lies at their heart.

Een sociaal-pedagogische kijk Dit artikel analyseert de manier waarop de buurt als gebouwde, gedeelde en geleefde omgeving tussenkomt in alledaagse socialisatieprocessen en zo mee vorm geeft aan de verhouding tussen individu en samenleving. Er wordt gebruik gemaakt van kwalitatief onderzoeksmateriaal dat werd verzameld in drie Gentse wijken in het kader van een doctoraatsstudie naar de sociaalpedagogische betekenis van de woonomgeving. De onderzoeksresultaten worden besproken in het licht van de stelling dat de buurt een drager is van maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen en betekenissen en dat buurtgerichte interventies niet enkel moeten geanalyseerd worden op de vraag wat werkt in welke context, maar ook op de vraag naar welke grondslagen aan de basis liggen van buurtgerichte interventies en tot welke invulling van stedelijk samenleven deze bijdragen.
