Abstract

Revising a Century of Dutch Music: Research Perspectives for Nineteenth-Century Music and Concert HistoryFocus on Dutch nineteenth-century concert and musical life has increased considerably over the past decades. However, the field of research is highly fragmented; conceptual and methodological approaches are scarcely elaborated and traditional approaches continue to determine the interpretational framework. In this article Thomas Delpeut proposes several research prospects for a revision of nineteenth-century concert and music history. In the first section Delpeut discusses recent studies, showing the need to reconsider both the 1880s as an overarching caesura and the revival of Dutch musical life revolving around the establishment of the Concertgebouw and Concertgebouw Orchestra. Next he presents various research possibilities inspired by international historiography – first to connect developments in musical discourse to practices in concert life, second to consider the public and their listening culture, and finally to investigate the experience of music in new social dimensions. De afgelopen decennia is de aandacht voor het Nederlandse negentiende eeuwse concert- en muziekleven flink toegenomen. Toch is het onderzoeksveld gefragmenteerd, conceptuele en methodologische benadering nauwelijks onderbouwd en traditionele inzichten lijken hardnekkig het interpretatiekader te blijven bepalen. Met dit artikel draagt Thomas Delpeut een aantal onderzoeksperspectieven aan voor een herziening van de negentiende-eeuwse muziek- en concertgeschiedenis. In het eerste deel bespreekt Delpeut recente studies die laten zien dat een fundamentele heroverweging nodig is van de jaren 1880 als alomvattende cesuur en van de opleving van het muziekleven ten tijde van de oprichting van het Concertgebouw en -orkest. Vervolgens presenteert hij verschillende onderzoeksmogelijkheden geïnspireerd door de internationale historiografie. Ten eerste om ontwikkelingen in het muziekdiscours aan concertpraktijken te koppelen, ten tweede om aandacht op het concertpubliek en zijn luistergedrag te vestigen, en ten slotte om de beleving van muziek in nieuwe maatschappelijke dimensies te bestuderen.
