Een nieuw zestiende-eeuws medisch manuscript uit Gelderland

Abstract

SUMMARY: In the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at Bethesda of the U.S.A., there is an anonymous medical manuscript (MS. 57) apparently written in the eastern part of the Netherlands, probably in Gelderland. It dates from the second half of the sixteenth century and is here drawn attention to at some length for the first time. It consists mainly of a large collection of medical recipes, waters and the properties of a number of herbs. These are preceded by two short treatises, one on aqua vitae and the other on urine, which are often found in this kind of manuscript. The recipes follow each other without any clearly discernible order, but fortunately the extensive and detailed subject-index with which the manuscript opens greatly improves its usefulness.
