Joseph Plateau (1801-1883): grondlegger van experimenteel en theoretisch stabiliteitsonderzoek

Abstract

SAMENVATTING: Plateau, veel beter bekend voor zijn bijdragen tot de optica, bestudeerde grondig het evenwicht en de stabiliteit van configuraties alleen onderhevig aan moleculaire krachten, dus essentieel oppervlaktespanning. Vervolgens bracht hij door zijn experimenteel en theoretisch werk het stabiliteitsonderzoek op dit terrein tot een ongekende hoogte. Aldus effende hij perfect de weg voor Lord Rayleigh, die een stap verder ging en daardoor de kroon op het werk plaatste. Hierdoor en door de grotere faam van Lord Rayleigh wordt het enorme pionierswerk van Plateau op gebied van stabiliteit overschaduwd, ja vergeten. We doen een poging tot eerherstel - zonder afbreuk te willen doen aan de prestatie van Lord Rayleigh - en laten zien welke (kleine?) stap aan Plateau ontbrak, nl. de tijdevolutie volledig in acht nemen, om zelf het volledige succes te oogsten. SUMMARY: The Belgian physicist Joseph Plateau (1801-1883), much better known for his optical contributions, studied profoundly the equilibrium and stability of configurations under the influence of molecular forces only, i.e. surface tension. He elevated this research to an unprecedented level, experimentally and theoretically. Thus he paved perfectly the way for Lord Rayleigh, who went one step further and hence was able to put the seal on the work. This and the greater fame of Lord Rayleigh overshadowed the tremendous pioneering work on stability done by Plateau to the extent that it is nearly forgotten. We attempt a rehabilitation - without declining the achievement of Lord Rayleigh - and show which (small?) step, in fact to take the time evolution fully into account, was lacking to Plateau in order to reach the complete success.
