Abstract
SUMMARY: The gynaecologist James Pratt White (1811-1881) was a pioneer in the history of medical education in the United States. He introduced bedside teaching in gynaecology and demonstrative midwifery, at a time when such an 'indecorous show' for students was deemed outrageous.
