Abstract

SUMMARY: Three movements were important for the colourtheory in Western-Europe in the period 1200-1500. The Augustinism [Robert Grosseteste, bishop of Lincoln (1170-1253) and John Peckham (ca 1215-1292)]. Grosseteste was influenced by Averroës. The Aristotelians Albertus Magnus (1206-1280), Thomas Aquinas (1224-1272), and Siger van Brabant (ca 1235-1281/84). Albertus tried to explain the colours of metals. To the third group belong Roger Bacon (ca 1212-ca 1292), Witelo (ca 1215-1286) Dietrich von Freiberg (ca 1250 - ca 1310). They were neoplatonists and empirists. At last attention is paid to William of Ockham, the founder of the school of the nominalists (ca 1285 - ca 1349) and to Pierre d'Ailly (1350-1420). Ockham accepted the species theory of the Aristotelians. The Augustinism is important on account of the metaphysics of light, taught by its supporters.
