Abstract

Commentary When addressing the interrelationship between universities and cities, a wide range of perspectives may be relevant. For the period before 1800, a formal administrative approach is called for. Such approach is less fruitful, though, after 1800, mainly because of the growing influence of national authorities on universities. To better understand the interaction between university and city during the first half of the nineteenth century, a focus on local elites seems rewarding. But for the years after 1850, historical study of university architecture may serve as a most productive angle. From that period on, cities and universities were expanding rapidly, and both needed more room. A focus on the building effort of universities allows one to compare developments among the various faculties as well as in different cities. Moreover, the architectural design of universities is always indicative of evolving educational ideas and ideals.
