Abstract

The significance of the Rijksatheneum at Franeker (1815-1844) for medical and pharmaceutical vocational education A semi-academic school for medical propedeutics and for the teaching of country-doctors, surgeons and pharmacists functioned in the Frisian town of Franeker from 1815 till 1843. This article gives a short description of the medical faculty of the atheneum, a quantification of the students, the main characteristics of the medical students in terms of their geographical background, their age, and the medical degree(s) they ultimately obtained. Finally the significance of the Franeker atheneum for the medical and pharmaceutical care in Friesland is sketched.
