Abstract

Microscopic specimens of the general practitioner G.J. Luchtmans In the second half of the 19th century some microscopic research was done by people outside the universities. One of them, G.J. Luchtmans (1808-1868), a general practitioner from Zutphen, was interested in the microscopical structure of the nervous system. He developed modifications of contemporary methods of fixation and staining of tissues. He managed to get excellent specimens using the microtome, designed by J.A. Boogaard, professor of anatomy at Leiden from 1866-1877.
