The Branched and Isoprenoid Tetraether (BIT) index is based on the relative abundance of
nonisoprenoidal glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) derived from organisms living in terrestrial
environments versus a structurally related isoprenoid GDGT ‘‘crenarchaeol’’ produced by marine
