Abstract
The position of the uv absorption bands of Bi3+ (1S0---3P1 transition) and of Eu3+ (charge-transfer transition) in a number of oxides are discussed. The position of the Bi3+ band seems to be determined by the covalency of the lattice; that of the Eu3+ band by other, mainly unknown, effects.
