Abstract
Some results in this talk are joint work with Ching-Li Chai; the influence of his ideas will be clear in several
aspects. I received further inspiration from joint work with Tadao Oda, Ke-Zheng Li, Torsten Ekedahl, Eyal
Goren, Johan de Jong, Thomas Zink and Chai-Fu Yu.
