De invloed van opvoedproblematiek op de duur van ondertoezichtstelling en mediatie door copingproblemen bij jeugdigen

Abstract

Supervision-orders often turn out to take a long time, which means that children have to stay in unsafe environments for a long time. Thereby, parenting seems to influence the supervision order. The aim of this study was to gain insight into the relation between parenting problems and the duration of a supervision order, and whether child coping is a mediator in this relation. Files of 173 Dutch children were requested, aged 0-18 year (M = 10.8 year), who were under supervision of the William Schrikker Group (Youth protection agency), between 1998-2018. The files were coded using a coding form. The results showed that parenting problems (physical and emotional abuse, physical and emotional neglect) were not related to the duration of a supervision order. In addition, child coping was no mediator in this relation and coping problems weren’t significantly predicted by emotional maltreatment and, physical and emotional abuse either. However, there was a significant positive relationship between physical maltreatment and coping problems; children who experience more physical abuse also tend to have more coping problems. Further research should examine which other factors are associated with a long-term supervision order and whether parenting problems play a role in this.
