This thesis aims to determine how power dynamics help form self-identity in American Gods. It does so through a close reading of the primary text within the framework of psychological criticism. Self-identity is constructed through interaction with social relations. This thesis explores how an imbalance of power within social relationships can have a detrimental effect on the development of self-identity. The defining relationships of a person’s past have a determining factor in shaping their self-identity. The power dynamics at play in these early relationships become a template for future ones, but they are not set in stone. New experiences offer the opportunity to break out of patterns that have been ingrained over time. American Gods illustrates how setting out a path towards change and self-improvement can be a painful and difficult but ultimately rewarding process.
