De Intentie om Seks te hebben van Adolescenten

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between several domains (individual, parent- child relationships, peers and media) and the intention to have sex for adolescents, and whether this relationship differs between boys and girls. The examined variables within each domain were global self-esteem, quality of the parent-child relationship, peer pressure and time spend on social networkingsites. Method: This study used quantitative data from a large scale longitudinal study with four measurements that have taken place between 2011 until 2015. The population exists of Dutch adolescents in the age of 12 to 18 years old, in which there were 49.92% boys and 50.08% girls, mostly with a Western background. The data has been collected through online quests. Results: The analysis showed that there were no significant relations between global self-esteem and peer pressure on one hand, and the intention to have sex on the other hand. However, quality of parent-child relationships and time spend on social networkingsites were related to the intention to have sex, and this relation was negative for quality of parent-child relationships and positive for time spend on social networkingsites. There were no differences found between boys and girls in the relationship between the domains and the intention to have sex, except for global self-esteem and time spend on social networkingsites. Girls scored higher than boys on the intention to have sex in the relation with global self-esteem, and boys scored higher than girls on the intention to have sex in the relation with time spend on social networkingsites. Conclusion: This study provides information that contributes to a save sexual development for adolescents and delivers information for the making of intervention programs.
