Abstract

Introduction The effect of parenting practices on the development of a depression in adolescents have been studied already. This current study focuses on the effect of the three aspects, emotional support, psychological control and behavioral control, on the development of a depression in adolescents. Expected was that low levels of emotional support and behavioral control and high levels of psychological control are associated with the development of depressive symptoms. Also expected was that girls would have more depressive symptoms than boys. Method Data of the longitudinal study CONAMORE were used. The study existed of five waves. A sample of 327 adolescents were asked to fill out questionnaires about the three aspects of parenting and depressive symptoms. The data of wave three and four were compared. Analysis was done with a hierarchical multiple regression. Results All three aspects of parenting were significant associated with the development of a depression. Girls scored higher on depressive symptoms than boys. Furthermore there was only an interaction-effect of psychological control and gender on the development of a depression. Discussion This study shows that it is important to explore the different aspects of parenting independently. Every aspect showed a different association on the development of depression.
