In vitro feeding of adults and nymphs of Rhipicephalus appendiculatus in the ‘Ticks-down’ system

Abstract

There are nearly 900 known tick species in the world and about 10% can act as vectors for a broad range of pathogenic micro-organisms. This also applies to Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, which tick can act as vector to several diseases with great impact on animal health. In this research it is tried to find the best method of in vitro feeding for R. appendiculatus adults and nymphs for subsequent studies on pathogen transmission by ticks. A Plexiglas tube with a silicone membrane was used as feeding unit. Different attachment stimuli were used in order to get as much attachment as possible. The highest attachment rate for adult ticks was 43% and was achieved by using a cheesecloth, hair extract and cow hair. For nymphs the attachment rate was 8%.

For adult ticks this appears a fairly good method, provided that young ticks are used. For nymphs further research is recommended.
