Prospective first estrus behavior post-partum by using movement activity during dry period in cows

Abstract Reasons for performing this study: Duration and intensity of behavioral estrus is decreasing over the past 50 years. The gyroscope pedometers are becoming more popular for use in dairy cattle as a tool for detecting estrus behavior. Being able to predict the first ‘silent’ heat post-partum, based on longer lying times 7 days prepartum, could make it possible to monitor the second and third cycle more closely and intervene if necessary. Main goal is to inseminate cows at the second heat or third heat, depending upon persistence of the cows and management preferences. However, the third heat is associated with lower duration of behavioral estrus. If the long period of follicular growth is during the NEB, high concentrations of NEFA's can have an adverse effect on oocyte developmental competence.
