The Character of Collecting

Abstract

Through the examination of six private collectors, who had not been subject to an in-depth study before, this thesis considers the character of private painting collections in the Netherlands up to the third quarter of the nineteenth century. Next to this, this research also sheds a light on the underlying collecting network and its effect on the character of private collections.
