Abstract

Introduction. The current study examined whether parent socio-demographic data (education, employment, income and neighborhood) differed for the risk on child maltreatment (physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and neglect). The aim of this study is to contribute to existing theories about potential risk factors and the prevalence of child maltreatment in toddlers. It is shown that child maltreatment has negative consequences for the health and development of toddlers. An elevated risk on child maltreatment was expected when parents have a poor education, are unemployed, have a low income or reside in a disadvantaged neighborhood. Method. Two questionnaires were filled out by parents or playschool and early education center employees about toddlers (n=250). MAN(C)OVA’s were used to examine the research questions. Results. Mothers with poor education have a higher risk on child maltreatment and neglect than mothers with medium and high education. Unemployed fathers have a higher risk on emotional abuse. Conclusion. The current research has shown that not all parent socio-demographic data play an important role in the risk for child maltreatment. Because this is partly in contrast with earlier research, more research is needed on this subject.
