Abstract

This research focuses on the motives of 11 Turkish football players for choosing a separate football club (a club with only Turkish members). Why do they choose to play for a separate football club? Is it because they want to play with other Turks of do they have different motives? What is the influence of their experiences with mixed clubs? The answers to these questions will determine whether the contact, conflict or constrict theory will be supported. Two motives seem to of importance. The first motive for playing at a separate club is the presence of Turkish friends and the opportunity to play with them on the same team. The second motive is identification with the other members of the football club. These motives show that choosing a separate football club don’t have to derive from bad experiences with mixed clubs and forms an evidence for the constrict theory.
