The commemoration of saints at late medieval York Minster; three case studies

Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to look at the commemoration of saint at late medieval York Minster from a multidisciplinary perspective. The fields of hagiography, liturgy and medieval memoria are combined in order to provide an insight into the different ways saints were commemorated at the Minster, and into the ways these different means of commemoration influenced each other. Three case studies of the descriptions of the lives of saints Nicholas, John the Evangelist and William of York in liturgical and hagiographic texts connected to the cathedral as well as their depiction on the Minster's stained glass windows make up the main part of the research.
