Wie bepaalt de houding van de brugklasser? Een vergelijking van de invloed van sociaal kapitaal van ouders en vrienden in de klas op schoolhoudingen

Abstract

Little research has been done on the relationship between attitudes and social capital. Coleman (1988) assumes that students receive information, values, norms and expectations about education by interpersonal relationships with parents, peers and others. The aim of this study is to examine to what extent the influence of parents and friends in class may explain those differences in attitudes. To test our hypotheses we used first graders(N=1018) in secondary schools in the Netherlands. We did several multiple regressions analyses and results show that the physical presence of parents and the number of friends in class have no significant effect on educational attitudes of the student. As expected, the attitudes of parents and friends in class have a positive relationship with the attitudes of the student. Remarkably, and not expected, is that the influence of friends in class is not a stronger predictor of the attitudes of the student than the expected opinions of parents about school.
