Submission and intention: Muslim identity and the headscarf in online discussions

Abstract

The headscarf and its relation to Muslim identity is a major topic of contention for Muslim immigrants, who have to present an acceptable identity vis-à-vis other Muslims. The present study uses Membership Categorisation Analysis to examine the membership categories and categorybound activities used in internet forum discussions on the headscarf and religious identity among Moroccan-Dutch. The analysis shows the construction of the category 'true Muslim' which is linked to wearing the headscarf out of religious submission. However, there are also alternative accounts which emphasise personal conviction and engagement with religious sources. Through these accounts, participants negotiate the cultural context on which categorisation practices are based.
