To and From the Magic Lantern: Reappearing Photographic Images of The Netherlands in Various Media

Abstract

In the nineteenth and early twentieth century, the Magic Lantern was among the most popular media to present images on a variety of topics to a variety of audiences. However, most motifs that we see on lantern slides were neither exclusive to nor especially produced for the magic lantern. The author gives some examples of how the same photographic images on the Netherlands appeared in a tourist guide book, in an academic compendium, on stereo photographs and lantern slides. Even around 1900, when it was easily possible to take new and up-to-date photographs, the same photographic clichés continued being disseminated over time, across national borders and on different carriers.
