Floating Car Data in Accessibility Studies

Abstract

Currently accessibility studies within urban planning are based on traditional data collection methods as travel suverys, demographic statistics and data from roadside systems. A relatively new upcoming source is the use of floating car data from moving vehicles. Floating car data makes it possible to study accessibility levels on urban areas on a large scale and with limited effort. This thesis researches the potential use of floating car data for different measures of accessibility. With the use of TomTom data the effect of holidays and severe weahter conditions on the accessibility of the urban area of Rotterdam was studied. It is concluded that floating car data is a valuable new source to be used in different accessibility measures but that the added benefit depends on the measure, research goal and data source used.
