Modern Adaptations of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice: Violence, Sex, Zombies and Vampires in Austen's Regency England

Abstract

In the past decade, there has been a rise in novels that combine the high brow and low brow cultures by mixing Jane Austen with gothic horror elements. The question arises why authors have chosen to write adaptations of Pride and Prejudice in the first place and more specifically, how they feel about Jane Austen. I analysed three novels: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (Seth Grahame-Smith), Dawn of the Dreadfuls (Steve Hockensmith) and Mr Darcy, Vampyre (Amanda Grange) in order to find out about this.
